The Silent Patient [better] Jun 2026

Throughout the novel, Alicia communicates primarily through her art. Her final painting, a self-portrait titled Alcestis , becomes a central metaphor. Alcestis is a figure from Greek mythology who agrees to die in place of her husband, Admetus, only to be saved by Hercules. In the play by Euripides, Alcestis never speaks after returning from the dead. The parallel is obvious: Alicia, too, has returned from a kind of death (the death of her previous life), and she, too, refuses to speak.

When released his debut novel in 2019, few predicted the seismic shock it would send through the literary world. Fast forward to today, and The Silent Patient has sold over 6.5 million copies worldwide, spent more than a year on the New York Times bestseller list, and is poised to become a major streaming series.
