The director also subverts the “hero vs. villain” trope brilliantly. Madhavan, known for his boy-next-door roles, plays the traditional hero. Dhanush, a lanky, unconventional-looking newcomer, plays the antagonist. Yet, by the end, you feel a disturbing ache for Dhanu, while still fearing him.
