Civil 3d Xref -

In standard AutoCAD, you Xref everything. In Civil 3D, you have a choice. Data Shortcuts allow you to reference Civil 3D objects (Surfaces, Alignments, Profiles) while keeping them dynamic. If the source surface changes, the DREF updates.

By breaking a project into separate files (e.g., one for the existing survey, one for the proposed utility layout, and one for the final sheet set), you keep individual file sizes small. This makes panning, zooming, and saving much faster. Team Collaboration: civil 3d xref

So, when do you use an Xref and when do you use a Data Shortcut? In standard AutoCAD, you Xref everything

: Use the Reload function in the External References palette to reflect the latest changes made to a linked file without restarting the session. If the source surface changes, the DREF updates

Binding a drawing containing data shortcuts or live Civil 3D objects often corrupts relationships. Instead, use eTransmit to package all Xrefs and shortcuts into a single zip folder without binding.
