Jawbreaker ’s aesthetic is its own language. Costume designer Frank Helmer dressed the Florals in a hyper-stylized palette of baby pink, lavender, and mint green—all against a world of beige high school hallways. Courtney’s transformation into a living piece of bubblegum (pink cashmere, pink platforms, a pink cell phone) is visual irony at its finest. The film is bathed in a glossy, almost sickly sweet light, as if the entire story is taking place inside a poisoned jawbreaker.

Formed in 1986 in New York City, Jawbreaker was born from the ashes of the band Red Mess. The core trio consisted of guitarist and vocalist Blake Schwarzenbach, bassist Chris Bauermeister, and drummer Adam Pfahler. Like many bands of the era, they relocated to the greener pastures of the West Coast, eventually settling in San Francisco.
