The film tells the story of Rebecca (Teresa Palmer), a former child psychologist who is forced to confront her own dark past when her younger brother, Martin (Gabriel Bateman), starts experiencing terrifying and unexplained events. As a child, Rebecca's mother (Marla Malcolm) used to tell her and Martin that a monster named BDSM (which stands for "Blackout Darkness Survival Mechanism") would appear when the lights went out. At first, the kids thought it was just a game, but as the lights flickered and strange things began to happen, they realized that something was very wrong.
