RainCAD had always aimed to bridge this gap. However, versions prior to 2021 were criticized for a steep learning curve and occasional instability when handling massive LiDAR datasets.

While the software remained primarily desktop-based, RainCAD 2021 introduced "LiveSync"—a background service that pushed model iterations to a secure cloud sandbox. Heavy hydraulic calculations (e.g., 2D floodplain mapping) could be offloaded to AWS servers, freeing the user’s workstation for design work.
