Will there ever be a single, installer-only universal joystick driver for Windows 7? Unlikely. The diversity of HID protocols makes a one-size-fits-all solution impossible. But the combination of vJoy, Joystick Gremlin, and a few scripts is the closest we will ever get.

For vintage joysticks (15-pin game port), adapters with built-in chips (e.g., "Rockfire") convert analog signals to USB HID, which Windows 7 natively understands.
