However, it wasn't until the 19th century that sniping emerged as a distinct military discipline. During the American Civil War, Confederate and Union soldiers employed snipers to harass and demoralize enemy forces. The British Army also recognized the value of sniping, establishing a school of musketry in 1853 to train soldiers in the art of long-range shooting.
