Originally, the game was intended to be a sequel to the hugely popular Mike Tyson's Punch-Out!! titled Mike Tyson's Intergalactic Power Punch . However, following Tyson's personal and legal troubles, Nintendo severed ties with the boxer. The developers, Beam Software, were left with a game that had already been designed around Tyson’s likeness.
