The gameplay mechanics are what set it apart. Unlike Pac-Man, where you are confined to a set path, in Digger, you create your own paths. You can dig through the dirt in any direction, but once you pass, the dirt is gone. This adds a layer of strategy; digging a long tunnel to grab a gem might leave you with no escape route when a monster rounds the corner.
