Born in Mosul (modern-day Iraq), Al-Mawsili was a prodigy. He wrote Al-Ikhtiyar as both a summary and a commentary. The book is built upon an earlier, more concise work titled Al-Mukhtar lil-Fatwa (The Chosen for Legal Verdicts) by Abu al-Fadl al-Mardini.
