On the surface, the premise of Saw II sounds like a simple escalation. Detective Eric Matthews (Donnie Wahlberg) arrives at a crime scene to find Jigsaw (Tobin Bell, in his breakout role as the mastermind) waiting for him. Jigsaw reveals that eight people, including Matthews’ own son, Daniel, are trapped in a house that is slowly filling with a lethal nerve agent. They have two hours to escape before the gas kills them.

The parallel narrative structure is brilliant. While the victims scramble through the nerve-gas house, Detective Matthews interrogates a calm, collected, and terminally ill John Kramer in a sterile warehouse.
