This paper examines the popular Indonesian Islamic literary genre often referred to colloquially as “Buku Tamasya Ke Surga” (A Tour to Heaven). These texts claim to describe firsthand or dream-based journeys to paradise, drawing on Quranic imagery, hadith, and local mystical traditions. While not scholarly works of theology, they wield significant influence on lay Muslim imaginations of the afterlife. This study analyzes the genre’s narrative structure, theological sources, didactic functions, and potential controversies (e.g., bid’ah or unsubstantiated claims). It concludes by recommending critical engagement rather than dismissal, emphasizing the need for clear differentiation between popular piety and authoritative Islamic doctrine.
