Sony provides official drivers for Windows. Plugging the camera into a PC yields nothing—Windows sees an unknown USB device. To use it, you must rely on community-made drivers.
Sony wants you to use a PlayStation console for these features. Releasing PC drivers would cost development money, create technical support headaches, and potentially cannibalize sales of their other PC peripherals (like the webcam series).
The popular controller emulator DS4Windows has a beta feature for PS5 camera support. Download the latest nightly build (not the stable version). Navigate to Settings > “PS5 Camera” and enable “Use as Webcam.” This also routes the camera directly to Windows without OBS.
Sony designed the camera specifically for the PlayStation 5 ecosystem. It uses a proprietary communication protocol. Furthermore, the PS5 Camera features an unusual connector—it looks like a USB-C plug, but it is slightly wider and has a unique notch. This means you cannot even physically plug it into a standard PC USB port without a specific adapter.
As of 2025, there are rumors that Sony might officially support PC peripherals following the success of the PlayStation Portal and PC ports of PS5 games. However, the company’s silence on the HD Camera suggests otherwise.
