The film opens during the Bangladesh Liberation War of 1971. Two young boys, Bikram and Bala, lose their families to the war and flee to Calcutta. To survive, they become small-time coal thieves. Fast forward to the 1980s, Bikram (Ranveer Singh) and Bala (Arjun Kapoor) have risen to become the most powerful "Gundays" (hooligans) in the city.
