After Wetlands , a small wave of “bodily autonomy” films emerged: The Diary of a Teenage Girl (2015), Raw (2016), Never Rarely Sometimes Always (2020). While less graphic, these films shared Wetlands ’ desire to film female bodies without shame. David Wnendt went on to direct more conventional films, but Wetlands remains his signature work—a messy, unforgettable postcard from a time when streaming was just beginning to democratize radical cinema.
