Set during the American Civil War, the story follows Union Army Lieutenant John J. Dunbar. After a suicidal act of bravery in battle, he is allowed to choose his next post and requests to see the "frontier" before it is gone. He is assigned to a desolate, abandoned outpost called Fort Sedgewick in South Dakota.

The story follows , a Civil War hero who requests a post at a remote frontier outpost to see the American West before it disappears. After arriving at the abandoned Fort Sedgewick, Dunbar gradually forms a bond with a nearby tribe of Lakota Sioux . He eventually abandons his former life, adopts the name "Dances with Wolves," and falls in love with Stands With A Fist , a white woman raised by the tribe.
