Wallace watches his nephew die, hunts the traitorous noble Mornay, and eventually faces capture. The graphic nature of his torture and execution (drawn and quartered) earned the film an R-rating. Yet, the standard allows for the subtlety of the final scene: Wallace’s vision of Murron in the crowd, smiling, as he whispers, “Freedom.”
