Purists often note significant changes. The film removed the "Madge" character (the mayor’s daughter who gives Katniss the mockingjay pin). It toned down the muttations (the dog-like creatures at the end are less explicitly the eyes of fallen tributes). Most notably, the film shifts the perspective. The book is entirely in Katniss’s first-person present tense—we know exactly when she is faking romance for the cameras. The film must externalize this, often using Seneca Crane (Head Gamemaker) to show the Capitol’s reaction.
