Jim is lonely. He is contemplating suicide. But he reads Aurora’s profile, watches her interviews, and falls in love with the idea of her. He struggles with the morality of the situation, but ultimately, in a moment of supreme weakness, he decides to wake her up. He condemns her to the same fate as his: a life that will end in the void, never reaching their destination, never seeing Earth again. He makes the decision to take her life away so that he can have a companion, yet he chooses to lie to her about the nature of her "accident."

The setup for Passengers is deceptively simple. The film takes place aboard the Avalon , a colossal spaceship transporting over 5,000 passengers and crew in hibernation pods to a colony planet known as Homestead II. The journey is slated to take 120 years. The passengers are asleep, destined to wake up only four months before arrival. He struggles with the morality of the situation,
