They were "synthetic humans"—biological constructs indistinguishable from the population they sought to destroy. This change did more than just update the lore; it introduced a pervasive sense of paranoia that defined the show. The enemy was no longer "out there"; they were "among us."

The most immediate and shocking departure was the redefinition of the Cylons. In the original series, the Cylons were a robotic empire created by an extinct reptilian race, serving as straightforward allegories for the Soviet Union or Nazis. They were easily identifiable by their chrome armor and scanning red eyes.
