One of the main drivers of interest in private key databases is the legend of "lost" Bitcoin—especially the ~1 million BTC mined by Satoshi Nakamoto in 2009.

The most profitable scam for attackers is the "database download" that is actually an executable file ( .exe , .scr , or a password-protected archive containing a virus). When you run it:

| Claim | Truth | |-------|-------| | “Download all Bitcoin private keys!” | Impossible. | | “Find forgotten wallets with BTC!” | Myth—bots already monitor weak keys. | | “I have a leaked private key database” | Probably malware or ancient data. | | “You can get rich scanning random keys” | Statistically impossible (less than winning Powerball 5 times in a row). |
