In the minds of fans, was a locked event. The marketing machine was poised to begin in early 2020. Rehearsals were scheduled for the spring of 2020. Filming was set for the summer of 2020. Everything was on track.

In early 2021, casting was still fluid. While fans campaigned for heavyweights, the actual cast wasn't solidified until the delay allowed for a wider search. The Wicked -2021- we almost got might have featured different actors. Ultimately, the delay gave us the now-iconic pairing of Cynthia Erivo (Elphaba) and Ariana Grande (Glinda), announced in late 2021. If the film had stayed on track for a 2021 release, those contracts might not have materialized. Wicked -2021-
